KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) recently organized a lecture on writing an effective research paper for fresh graduates and house officers as part of its Professional Skills Development Program, designed to equip them with hands-on training and mentorship, and to
bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world practice.
The lecture titled “Writing a Research Paper: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners” was delivered by Dr. Raja Muhammad Daniyal, Assistant Professor of Oral Surgery at FJDC, focusing on essential research paper writing skills, critical for career growth, securing research funding, and gaining academic recognition.
Dr. Daniyal began by discussing how to select a research topic, underscoring the importance of conducting a thorough literature review to identify gaps in existing knowledge and formulate original ideas.
He said that establishing a research plan from the start helps researchers balance clinical duties without feeling overwhelmed.
The lecture detailed the IMRAD format—Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion—emphasising the need for clarity, conciseness, and selecting an appropriate journal.
By avoiding common mistakes like unfocused introductions and ambiguous methods, dental professionals can produce impactful research that enriches the field and enhances patient care.
Dr. Daniyal further advised participants on choosing suitable journals, cautioning that an ill-suited journal can result in unwarranted rejections despite a paper’s quality. Selecting a journal aligned with the research topic significantly improves the chances of publication.
He concluded by reminding attendees that research is more than publishing papers; it also drives progress in dentistry and patient care. Engaging in research allows professionals not only to advance their careers but also to contribute to shaping the future of dental practice.
