LONDON: A significant rise in mouth cancer cases in Wales has highlighted the urgent need for early detection, with experts emphasizing the critical role of dental care in identifying symptoms early. According to a recent report from Public Health Wales (PHW), nearly half of all mouth cancer cases in Wales are diagnosed at advanced stages, which complicates treatment and reduces survival rates. Men, in particular, are more likely to delay seeking medical help, contributing to the late-stage diagnoses.
Bryan Webber, a retired dentist from Cardiff, shared his personal experience with mouth cancer after noticing a white patch on his tonsil and a lump on his neck in 2019. His professional background made him aware of the symptoms, but many others neglect to seek timely medical attention, often mistaking symptoms like ulcers or infections for common oral issues.
Webber’s cancer was detected early, and although it was growing quickly, his timely treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, helped him overcome the disease. Now, as an advocate for mouth cancer awareness, he stresses that dental professionals are well-trained to spot early signs of mouth cancer, but patients must seek regular check-ups to ensure early identification.
The report from PHW reveals that mouth cancer is more common in men, with cases peaking in individuals aged 60 to 69. Smoking and alcohol consumption are major risk factors, with combined usage increasing the likelihood of developing the disease by five times. Despite the rise in cases, survival rates are improving, especially among younger individuals, thanks to advancements in treatment.
Paul Brocklehurst, a dental consultant at PHW, echoed the importance of early detection, stating that when mouth cancer is diagnosed at later stages, treatment becomes far more difficult and survival rates are significantly reduced. He urges patients to recognize early symptoms and consult healthcare professionals promptly to increase their chances of successful treatment.

The rising incidence of mouth cancer serves as a wake-up call for both the public and healthcare providers, reinforcing the importance of dental visits and early intervention in preventing the disease from progressing to advanced stages.
