Mini-Dentist Experience Day for Children with Special Needs at HKU

POKFULAM ISLAND, HONG KONG: On November 16, the Institute for Advanced Dentistry – Multi-Specialty Clinic (IAD-MSC) at HKU Dentistry hosted a Mini-Dentist Experience Day, specifically designed for children with special needs. The event, in collaboration with the Child Development Centre (CDC), a local NGO supporting children with additional needs, saw the participation of 23 children and their parents, along with the clinic's pediatric dentistry team.
Dental visits can be particularly challenging for children with sensory sensitivities, often leading to anxiety and discomfort. Recognizing this, the Mini-Dentist Experience Day provided a series of fun and interactive activities to ease children into the dental environment. Kids got the chance to play the role of a dentist, learning about oral hygiene and practicing dental check-ups on their parents.
The day concluded with a dental check-up by IAD-MSC’s resident dentist, giving parents valuable insights into their children's oral health. The event was met with positive feedback from both parents and CDC staff, who appreciated the engaging approach to reducing dental anxiety.
IAD-MSC, part of HKU’s Faculty of Dentistry, is committed to providing specialized care and training in pediatric dentistry, particularly for children with complex medical needs. The clinic offers advanced dental services, including treatment under general anesthesia when required.
