Islamabad: Academy of Continuing Health Education & Research (ACHER) held the second session of its Implant long-course on 21st and 22nd June 2014. Seven participants attended the session. The session comprised of both didactic lectures and hands-on exercises. Didactic lectures transitioned from the basics of oral implantology to treatment planning and elucidation of surgical technique. Dr. Hammad Hasan elucidated the various treatment options possible in implantology, and gave a step-by-step lecture on the backward planning in implant dentistry. Dr. Adnan Aslam spoke on the basic surgical techniques and continued it to different anatomical considerations in implant dentistry. Dr. Adil Shahnawaz delivered a lecture on the use of CBCT in an interactive manner. Post lunch session on the second day was dedicated to a live implant surgery case of a 22 year old male patient, who had had lost multiple upper anterior teeth, and few lower teeth, with significant loss of bone. A chin onlay graft was used to augment the lower implant sites for future implantation, whereas an extended ridge split, with concomitant implant placement, bone grafting and barrier membrane coverage was performed in the maxilla. The third session which will be conducted in August will encompass advanced surgical techniques in dental implantology, with an emphasis on developing a treatment algorithm in the bone deficient jaws.
