Charged-parking system at hospitals irks patients

KARACHI - Charged-parking system introduced by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Traffic Police in the peripheries of the city’s major public sector hospitals has become a matter great inconvenience for patients and their attendants.

Charged-parking sites have been established at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) and Sindh Government Hospital, Laiquatabad.
The KMC officials have fixed Rs10 parking fee for a motorcycle and Rs20 for a car.

Moreover, Traffic Police has introduced unlawful charged-parking system outside the gate of the CHK’s main emergency department where youngsters could be seen collecting parking fee from those visiting the health facility.   

Terming the act of charging parking fee from poor patients and their attendants `unfair’, the city’s director health Dr Zafar Ejaz said that the charged-parking system introduced outside public sector hospitals should be abolished forthwith in the interest of general public.
