SIOHS Holds Hands-on Scientific Research Workshop

KARACHI - A three day workshop was recently organized by Department of Orthodontics, SIOHS, at Professional Development Center, Jinnah Sindh Medical University in collaboration with Learning Innovation Division Higher Education Commission, Islamabad. The workshop was organized as part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program, and the theme of the workshop centered on providing an orientation to the participants regarding the general protocols of managing and carrying out good quality research at faculty level. This was followed by sessions related to developing and honing the art of presenting their research findings to multidisciplinary audiences for promotion and appraisal. 



The workshop was enthusiastically attended by the faculty members of SIOHS and affiliated colleges. The total number of participants were 36. The guests of honor were Prof. Dr. S.M.Tariq Rafi (Vice Chancellor of JSMU), Prof. Dr. Lubna Baig (Pro-VC, JSMU), Prof. Dr. S. M. Kefi Iqbal (Dean, faculty of  dentistry, SIOHS, JSMU) and Registrar JSMU, Dr. M. Irfan Ashraf. The workshop coordinator was Dr. Erum Behroz Khan (Incharge of Orthodontic department SIOHS), the Resource Persons were Dr. Shaheena Akbani (Controller Academic & Research Training), Dr. Rizwanullah (Sr. Lecturer SIOHS, JSMU), Sajid Atif (Lecturer Biostatistics JSMU) & Irfan Zafar (Librarian SIOHS). 


The main areas covered in the workshop ranged from highlighting various research methodologies to describing the various techniques of data analyses. Thorough guidelines were also emphasized by the senior professors with respect to developing an understanding of the underlying logic of the various techniques and methods commonly employed in research design as a whole.


The lectures were followed by hands-on sessions demonstrating the correct uses of several different applications and software such as SPSS, Endnote and the HEC provided PERN Connectivity which were highly appreciated by the audience. It was the wish of the organizers as well as the participants that such informative workshops and seminars be conducted repeatedly in the future.
