Karachi: Colgate holds a global art contest annually where young artists (6-9 years old) are invited to submit their artwork showing how to keep smiles healthy and bright, and 12 winning artworks are featured on the Colgate calendar, which is distributed across the globe.
The winning artworks are selected on the basis of originality, creativity, imagination and best rendering of the theme "Why my bright smile is important". The Colgate Global Art Contest for 2023 saw more than 67000 entries from Pakistan alone.
Thirteen local winners were selected for competing with finalists from countries around the world in the final contest held in New York, USA. Out of these, the artwork submitted by Muhammad Usman Adnan Sheikh (8 years) of Foundation Public School, MAS junior campus, Karachi, was not only selected as one of the 12 winners globally, but was considered the winner among all the winners as his entry was selected to feature on the cover of the Colgate calendar 2023. This is the first time that an art entry from Pakistan will be gracing the cover of the calendar, and is indeed a great honor for Pakistan.
Usman is the son of Dr Samira Adnan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry at Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences, JSMU. When asked about his inspiration for the artwork, Usman said that since his mother is a dentist, she had told him all about how to keep his smile healthy.
This inspired him to create his artwork, which focuses on showing all the ways one can keep their teeth healthy and beautiful, and the things that make one smile. He is very happy about this wonderful accomplishment, and he extended his congratulations to all winners from Pakistan and globally. He hopes to take part in the contest next year also and win again. Colgate invited the local winners, including Usman, to a press conference held at Karachi Arts Council on 14th Oct, 22, where Usman was awarded a grant of 250$ as a global winner, while his school received a grant of 500$.
