BAHAWALPUR: Pakistan witnesses approximately 83,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths due to breast cancer each year, say experts at a seminar arranged by the Directorate of Women Health Care and Maternity Home at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) on breast cancer awareness, catering to female students, faculty members, and officers.

The seminar, presided over by Prof Dr Shazia Anjum, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Biological Sciences, aimed to address the significance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr Anjum emphasised that the event served as an initiative to enhance knowledge and reduce the stigma surrounding breast cancer by educating attendees about its symptoms and treatment. She underscored the importance of educating female students and employees, who could, in turn, disseminate this crucial information within the community, safeguarding their loved ones.

Dr Sheikh Safeena Sidiq, Director of Women Health Care and Maternity Home, extended a warm welcome to guest speakers, students, and faculty members. She highlighted the range of services and facilities available at the WHMH.

During the seminar Dr Farhat-ul-Ann Tayyaba, Assistant Professor, and Dr Fatima Arshad, a breast and general surgeon at the Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital, delivered a comprehensive lecture on breast cancer awareness.

They drew attention to the alarming statistic that Pakistan has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia, with an estimated 1 in 9 women facing the risk of developing the disease in their lifetime. Furthermore, the speakers emphasized that breast cancer cases are on the rise among women aged 30 to 40 and are displaying more aggressive characteristics. The message conveyed was clear: early detection and consultation with a medical professional can save lives.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Samina Ejaz, Associate Professor and Additional Director of Women Health Care and Maternity Home.

The event was attended by the female faculty members, officers, staff, and students, including Prof Dr. Nargis Naz, Chairperson of the Department of Botany, Dr Zarmina, Dr Sheema Sadia, Medical Officers, Fatima Muzahir, Deputy Registrar of Public Affairs, and various others dedicated to this important cause.
