LAHORE: A one-day workshop on 'Cross Infection Control in a Private Setting' was held at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) as a part of the IADSR 8th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD). The workshop was facilitated by Dr Sameer Nasir, BDS, MS (Restorative Dentistry), and currently, practicing at his own clinic.
The initial session of the workshop consisted of an introduction to cross-infection, the chain of infection, and different modes of infection transmission. Prevention of infection transmission was discussed in-detailed with SOPs, which are to be practiced for infection control. Different techniques for infection control, including sterilization, appropriate disposition of contaminated waste material, and wrapping, were explained to the participants.
This was followed by a discussion on the management of high-risk patients, general protocols for patient examination, and cross infection control steps for individual dental procedures. Dr Sameer emphasized on the need for immunization of practitioners, which is being neglected by many practitioners.
The hands-on session involved the identification of instrument processing area in private practice, receiving instruments, washing, autoclaving, instrumental drying, and storage. Moreover, participants prepared the dental unit for different phases during the day, which also included the preparation for fillings, extractions, impressions, dental implants, and aligners. Dr Sameer also explained infection control in dental radiology and computers.
The participants took part in the hands-on session with zeal and zest, and the facilitator thoroughly answered their queries regarding the topic.
