HONG KONG: After the recent approval of the STA Wand by the China State Food and Drug Administration, Milestone Scientific has established a joint venture in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to market its computer-assisted anaesthesia system to customers in China. In addition, the US manufacturer intends to market a number of medical products and certain medications in the country and other parts of Asia through its new distribution company in the near future.
In a press release, the company said it will hold 40 per cent of Milestone China, which will be led by former Director of Beijing Tiantan Biological Products and former Vice-President of China National Biotec Group Lidong Zhang.
“Through this joint venture, we now have greater access to dentists, physicians and hospitals across China and other parts of Asia,” Milestone CEO Leonard Osser commented.
East Coast-based Milestone received approval for the Wand Computer Assisted Anesthesia System from the Chinese regulatory authorities only last month. The device, which retails for approximately US$1,700 in North America, consists of a control computer and a pressure-sensitive handpiece that, according to the company, provides almost painless delivery of anaesthetics during all kinds of dental treatment.
It also allows clinicians to perform single-tooth anaesthesia in the periodontal intraligamentary space, which is claimed to result in less pain and fewer post-operative problems.
A US development, the system has been available in dental markets since 2006. Milestone currently distributes the STA Wand to more than 50 countries worldwide.
