Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department
A Two-Day course based on Basic Surgical Skills was conducted by the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Baqai Dental College (BDC).
The course was conducted at the Specialized Skills Lab, at Baqai Dental College. This course was designed to introduce surgical trainees to safe practice, within a controlled environment. It aimed to teach, assess and certify the ability of trainees to use safe and sound surgical techniques that are common and associated with all forms of surgery.
The Course was facilitated by Dr. Kashif Ikram (Principal, BDC), Dr. Humayun K. Siddiqui (HOD & Assistant Prof, OMFS Dept) and Dr. Aijaz Ali Zaidi (Senior Registrar). Workshop sessions were coordinated by Dr. Shehryar Hameed Siddiqi (Senior Registrar), Dr. Qadeer Ahmad (Senior Registrar), Dr. Arfae Nazir (Registrar) and Dr. Rida Ilyas (Registrar).
A total of 50 participants attended this workshop. Learning outcomes achieved with this workshop were;
Understanding and practice of safe operating techniques, gowning and gloving, understanding and practice of correct techniques for laying safe surgical knots, the characteristics & handling techniques of surgical instruments, the principles of handling tissues and recognizing differing requirements for differing, understanding and practicing local anesthetic techniques, along with the principles of patient assessment followed by primary surgical management of the infected and contaminated soft tissues.
All surgical aspects were covered and proper demonstrations were given by the facilitators. Constant supervision and question answer sessions were ongoing through out the session to optimize learning and practice, both. All participants had an incredible learning experience and gave a positive feedback at the end of the workshop.
Principal BDC, Dr. Kashif Ikram appreciated the efforts of his fellow doctors and encouraged the students to learn and polish their practical skills.
