School boy's death after COVID vaccine remains a mystery

LAHORE: The cause of death of a matric student in Vehari, a day after he got the first dose of COVID vaccine, could not be investigated, according to the committee formed by the Punjab government.

The Punjab government had constituted a 5-member committee to probe into the death of Muhammad Mudassar that occurred recently in Vehari.  He died a day after he received his first Covid vaccine jab at a public school.

The committee, which has been comprised of  Vehari District Health Officer (DHO), World Health Organisation (WHO) representative and three local health officials, said in its report that Mudassar's parents had refused the postmortem of their son's body. The refusal made it challenging to determine the exact cause of his death, the officials said in the report.

According to the deceased father, his son had no previous history of disease or illness and was involved in routine activities when he collapsed suddenly. He also claimed that the health team administered the vaccine at school to his son and other students without the consent of their parents.

The report reads that the inquiry committee was unanimous that no signs or symptoms had been observed associated with the COVID-19 vaccine that could have led to the student's death

However, according to the boy's father, his son had severe pain in the arm after the jab. Moreover, contrary to the inquiry report,  the father vehemently denied that he had refused the postmortem of his son. While blaming the health authority for not conducting the post mortem, he said they skipped this requirement which could have exposed the facts regarding the efficacy of the COVID vaccine for children. He demanded to lodge a murder case against the school administration and the vaccination team.
