KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has warned Karachiites against Naegleria fowleri threat, urging them to take preventive measures to avoid the rare but deadly waterborne brain-eating amoeba found in freshwater.
The minister, addressing a press conference here, advised the public to stay away from swimming pools without proper chlorination and avoid activities that may cause water to enter their noses.
The Sindh health department is going to launch a campaign to create awareness among the public about the risks associated with the disease, he said.
The minister’s advice comes after the disease claimed three lives in the port city last month.
He said chlorination is the key method to kill the amoeba and keep the life-threatening disease at bay.
Another way, he said, is to use boiled water while cleaning the nose as the germ may enter through the nasal cavity of its victim and attack the brain.
