Digital Dentistry Workshop at Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences, JSMU
Karachi: The digital era has brought a revolution in the field of dentistry. With the advent of digital technology, all aspects of diagnosis, treatment planning and patient management have been transformed.
It is essential that dentists and dental students in Pakistan be cognizant of these advances, and be able to utilize these modalities to serve their patients with standards at par with the rest of the world.
Keeping this in mind, the Department of Operative Dentistry at Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences, under the leadership and guidance of Dean of Dentistry, Dr Syed Yawar Ali Abidi, organised a 2-day workshop on the theme of “Digital Dentistry” on 28th and 29th October ‘22, with emphasis on the understanding and hands-on use of the digital software of Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).
The workshop was facilitated by Dr Dil Rasheed, Principal CIMS Dental College and Mr Zulfiqar Ahmed Atiq, Software expert for CBCT. Vice Chancellor JSMU, Professor Amjad Siraj Memon appreciated the organisation of the seminar and workshop based on the contemporary requirements of the dental profession.
In this regard, he said that the students should pay their role in serving humanity by using innovative techniques and information provided to them in this workshop and apply them in their clinical practice.
Addressing the participants, Dr Yawar thanked the guest speakers for their presence and for providing an opportunity to the participants to learn about Digital Dentistry. He said that although we still have a long way to go in implementing technological advances in dentistry within Pakistan, sessions and workshops such as these can be considered a first step in this regard.
He advised that dental practitioners should reflect and modify their learning exponentially, keeping the international advancement into consideration. Dr Dil Rasheed provided a detailed explanation of the basic dynamics of CBCT to the participants, and shared his clinical cases highlighting the utility of CBCT in endodontics and implantology.
The lecture was moderated by Dr Maham Muneeb, and was attended by eminent faculty and clinicians from across Karachi, as well as post-graduate trainees, house officers and students. Prof. Zubair Abbasi acknowledged the guest speakers and students for their participation and shared interest at the end of the session, while Drs Samira Adnan, Maham Lone and Isma Sajjad presented the guest speakers with momentos of appreciation.
Later, Mr Zulfiqar conducted the comprehensive hands-on session for the participants where they were individually provided with computer systems to explore the CBCT software, while gaining in-depth understanding of all its features and application in various clinical scenarios including endodontic access and implant placement. More than 50 participants were trained on the software over two days. The participants thoroughly appreciated the efforts put forth by the facilitators, faculty, residents and staff of the Department of Operative Dentistry, particularly residents Dr Haider and Dr Minhaj, for the conduction of a unique and pertinent workshop and reported a significant enhancement in their learning and understanding of CBCT.
