Excessive use of red meat harmful: experts

KARACHI - Experts have warned that excessive consumption of red meat could increase the risk of developing cardiovascular, kidney, liver, diabetes and gastroenteritis diseases.


A senior leader of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Dr SM Qaiser Sajjad said that people usually store meat in refrigerators for longer period without knowing that such practice could cause gastrointestinal complications. He said meat should not be stored in refrigerators for a longer period as it could develop bacteria in case refrigerators fail to maintain proper temperature owing to power outages or load-shedding.
He advised the people to prepare their meat dishes with vegetables and avoid spicy food.

Prominent cardiologist Dr Hamidullah Malik said that excessive use of meat could increases the risk of heart, liver, diabetes, gastroenteritis and kidney problems.
He said excessive use of meat is very harmful, especially for those people who are already suffering from cardiovascular, liver and kidney diseases. Besides, excessive consumption of meat could also enhance uric acid and cholesterol level, he added.
Dr Malik advised people suffering from cardiovascular, kidney, and liver diseases to avoid eating meat in excessive quantity.
