KARACHI: Faculty Development is an integral part of any institute’s success and Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) has continued with its rich tradition to excel in teaching and learning.
The Medical Education Department at FJDC organised a series of four faculty workshops for 2022 which focused on further developing the academic and soft skills of their faculty to enhance student motivation and interaction for an even better learning environment.
These workshops were facilitated by Dr Shahid Mitha (Head, Medical Education Department, FJDC) along with Dr Faryal Abdullah as co-facilitator (Faculty member, Medical Education Department, FJDC).
The first workshop in the series was titled “Presentations and Presentation Skills” and focused on enhancing faculty PowerPoint skills as well as augmenting the delivery of their modules with more compelling, engaging, transformative and effective methods.
The second workshop, “Reflection and Reflective Practice” focused on encouraging reflection as well as reflective writing for deeper learning and critical thinking.
The third workshop titled “Student Engagement for Gen Z Students” elaborated upon the characteristics of the new generation in our colleges and worked on techniques to better engage them to increase academic achievement.
The final workshop “Mentorship” concentrated on developing the faculty for gradually transforming from a teacher to a facilitator to promote the skills of lifelong learning in students. It highlighted the benefits of mentoring faculty as well as students and the chaoticities of good mentors and mentees.
The feedback taken after these workshops was very positive and the activity was highly appreciated by both junior and senior participants. The Medical Education Department is currently working toward organizing more workshops in the upcoming new year.
