KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) held a workshop recently, titled “The Art of Being Assertive in Educational Learning”. It was conducted by Dr Zubia Waqar (Assistant Professor Department of Community & Preventive Dentistry) at the college’s Clinical Campus. The workshop was designed to help individuals develop their assertiveness skills to communicate more effectively, build stronger relationships, and achieve their goals. It was attended by 18 participants.
The workshop began with a presentation on the basics of assertiveness and the differences between assertive, passive, and aggressive communication styles. Participants were then given the opportunity to practice assertive communication through role-playing exercises and group discussions.
During the workshop, the partakers learned about the importance of setting boundaries, expressing their needs and wants clearly, and using "I" statements to take responsibility for their own thoughts and feelings. They also learned about the power of active listening and the importance of staying calm and composed when communicating with others.
The workshop also covered topics such as dealing with difficult people, handling conflicts and negotiations, and building self-confidence. The attendees were encouraged to share their own experiences and challenges related to assertiveness and received feedback and support from the workshop facilitator and their peers.
Overall, the workshop was well-received by the participants, with many reporting that they felt more confident in their ability to communicate assertively and were better equipped to handle difficult situations. A number of participants also noted that they will be able to apply what they learned during the workshop in their personal and professional lives. The assertiveness training workshop was a success and will be beneficial to the attendees in terms of improving their assertiveness skills.
