LAHORE-Word Oral Health Day is held annually around the world focusing on raising awareness of the importance of good oral health. Every year it is held under a new and specific theme. The theme for WOHD 2017 is Live Mouth Smart.
An important event for the entire community, World Oral Health Day is an initiative that hopes to contribute to increasing the number of people in the world who never have oral health issues to over 10% of the world’s population.
To promote awareness around these issues the College of Dentistry, Sharif Medical and Dental College held a three day free dental camp from 20th March- 22nd March 2017. It was organized by Head of Community and Preventive Dentistry, Dr. Amna Nauman Khan under the auspices of Principal, College of Dentistry Prof. Col. Iffat Batool. The faculty of dentistry was fully committed and enthusiastically participated in the event.
The OPD was conducted by Dr. Salsbeel Khan, Dr. Mahwish Najeeb, Dr. Sadaf Amjad Khawaja, Dr. Zainab Javaid, Dr. Ayesha Ayub, Dr. Sameen Irfan and Dr. Hira Butt under supervision of Dr. Aneela Amjad. Approximately 300 patients were catered at the camp. Light was shed in a simple and engaging way to teach them about the benefits and importance of maintaining oral hygiene in order to reduce the risk of associated health complications.
A string of vibrant activities was also held to motivate people on this landmark occasion. A poster competition was held by first year BDS students under supervision of Department of Oral Biology. Six teams from second year BDS challenged each other with a mastermind quiz Battle of the Brains posing questions from dental materials. Third year BDS participated in Table clinics addressing health issues related to smoking, halitosis, oral cancer, periodontal lesions and more under guidance of Department of Oral Pathology. Final year students gave a well-rounded and themed power point presentations on different restorative materials and techniques in “Google the material map”. Students, faculty and paramedic staff participated actively throughout.
These events were judged by senior faculty members of the Dentistry fraternity of SMDC, which included Dr. Nauman Rauf Khan, Dr. Uzma Shahid, Dr. Saadia Rana, Dr. Mehmood Asghar, Dr. Faiza Malik, Dr. Arshad Aziz, Dr. Nasrullah, Dr. M. Moazzam, Dr. Irsam Haider and Dr. Mubashir Rasheed on the basis of layout, presentation skills, creativity and the knowledge regarding the topic.
Principal College of Dentistry, Prof. Dr. Col. Iffat Batool Syed concluded the event by highlighting the importance of oral health. She lauded the efforts of Faculty of dentistry for organizing a successful event and students for their active participation in raising awareness regarding different aspects of dental health and oral hygiene.
Chief guest Dr. Muhammad Adnan Khan, Chief Executive, Sharif Medical City, along with Principal, Sharif Medical and Dental College distributed the certificates to winners.
WOHD is dedicated to raising global awareness on the prevention and control of oral diseases, by spreading messages about good oral hygiene practices to adults and children alike, and demonstrating the importance of optimal oral health in maintaining general health and wellbeing.
As the largest global awareness campaign focusing on oral health, WOHD also aims to raise the profile of oral health on the global health and development agenda by highlighting the social and economic impact of oral diseases.
