KARACHI - The Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry has organized a Research Based Poster Competition as an initiative towards beginning of academic research development among undergraduate students under the leadership of Prof Dr. Mervyn Hosein (Prinicipal Ziauddin College of Dentistry) and Dr. Sidra Mouhiuddin (Head of Department Community and Preventive Dentistry). The students’ posters were judged by a senior faculty member Dr. Farah Ahmed (Associate Professor Community Health Sciences Department).
The competition began with a display of five research based posters made by the students of second year BDS. These students were taught research skills in addition to their academic course work by respective mentors (lecturers) Dr. Khizra Rehman, Dr. Abeeha Zaidi & Dr.Atiya Karim (Senior Lecturer). The research topics were selected and designed to perform pilot and cross sectional studies as an initial step towards research at undergraduate level. Successful students were rewarded with prize money of PKR 4000/ 1st prize and PKR 2000/ for 1st runner up. In addition to the prize all participants were given certificates of appreciation.
Comparative effects of miswak and other methods of oral hygiene maintenance by Maira Anwer, Shiza Ahmed, Areba Rana, Faryal Farooq, Marium Lateef were first runner up. There was a tie between two posters named “Dental Caries and Passive Smoking” by Maliha Malik, Marium Javed, Meena Kumari, and Nimra Rashid & “Dental Caries and Sensitivity due to Fizzy Drink Consumption “ by Areesha Khan, Moin Jahangir, Ibtesham Afzal, Aniqa Saeed.
