KARACHI: Breast cancer remains a critical health challenge in Pakistan, claiming the lives of approximately 40,000 women each year. With nearly 90,000 new cases annually, Pakistan records one of the highest breast cancer incidence rates in Asia. Early detection and timely intervention are crucial to reducing this alarming mortality rate.
Recognizing the urgent need for widespread awareness, Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) recently hosted a breast cancer awareness session led by Dr. Zubia Masood, Associate Professor at Bahria Medical University. Dr. Zubia provided valuable insights on the importance of breast cancer screening, debunking common myths and sharing the latest statistics on the disease in Pakistan.

Highlighting life-saving strategies, Dr. Zubia stressed that regular mammograms from age 35 significantly boost early detection rates. "Screening can identify cancer before symptoms arise, improving the chances of successful treatment," she explained.
Dr. Zubia urged women to adopt a healthy lifestyle with balanced eating habits and consistent physical activity to manage weight, reduce estrogen levels, and enhance overall well-being—key factors in cancer prevention. She also reinforced the value of routine breast self-examinations, empowering women to take proactive control of their health.
General Physicians and Gynecologists play vital roles as the first point of contact for diagnosis, providing essential guidance and referrals to specialists for advanced care.
The session concluded with a collective pledge to promote awareness and encourage breast cancer screening among family, friends, and the community.
