FJDC FOSTERS ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE DENTAL PRACTICE
Karachi: The Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) is a premier institution delivering high quality dental education in Karachi. Besides its robust curricular activities, FJDC is consistently contributing towards the evolution of dentistry, by providing insightful platforms and forums for triggering developmental debates among the dental experts and professionals.
Recently, the Top management, faculty and many proactive students of FJDC organized a valuable event to create awareness and promote environment friendly dental practices, all over Pakistan. Numerous renowned speakers and environmentally-conscious officials enlightened the participants with the effective methodologies and steps that can help the dental clinics in protecting the environment from harmful chemicals, emissions and cautious use of dangerous dental materials. The Philosophy behind the programme was;
“The ultimate purpose of business is not, or should not be, simply to make money. Nor is it merely a system of making and selling things. The promise of business is to increase the general well-being of humankind through service, a creative invention and ethical philosophy.”
For many practicing dentists in Pakistan, Green Dentistry is merely a term understood, rather misunderstood. Health Care sector in Pakistan has yet not come up with a Green Health Care movement, which itself demonstrates the level of awareness of this very concept. The impact of non eco-friendly dentistry on the environment is not documented to date. For this purpose, an Eco-Friendly Dentistry day was celebrated at the Pre-Clinical Campus of Fatima Jinnah Dental College by the department of Oral Anatomy on the 13th of June 2014. Students of second professional B.D.S demonstrated that though the non-mercury related environmental impact of dentistry is not abundantly documented, it is nevertheless worthy of the professions attention!
The Chief Guest for the day was Mr. Niaz Ahmed Khaskheli, Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry, Government of Sindh. Who also generously donated a large number of forestry plants, for every student of the FJDC.
Students of second professional B.D.S presented Power Point presentations, Poster Presentations, Table Clinics and Working Models of the concept. They emphasized on the Green Recommendations that a practicing dentist should keep in mind while working in the clinic. During the presentations, a survey was also discussed which was held by the department at the clinical campus. The participating students pledged to become ambassadors’ of Green Dentistry and called themselves as Envirodentalist!
At the end of the seminar, tree plantation was done by the chief guest, along with Dr. Syed Baqar Askary, Dr. Tasleem Hosein and Dr. Sabiha Mirza. Senior faculty members and students also participated.
