Lahore: The second session of Orthodontics course was recently held at Faryal Dental College (FDC), Faizpur. The event was conducted under the supervision of Head of Orthodontic department, Professor Dr.Farhat Amin. The program was assisted by Dr.Mariyam Masood, Dr.Adeel Iftikhar, Dr Ayesha Riaz and Dr Hira Asghar.
The extensive course began with lecture sessions and hand on practices pertaining to bonding in orthodontics and Class I Malocclusion cases and mechanics for teeth retraction. The sessions focused to introduce concept of bonding materials used in orthodontics. Dr Hira gave detailed lecture on materials used in bonding and band cementation in daily orthodontic practice. Dr Mariyam Masood discussed the role of anchorage in orthodontics.
After short interval the course resumed and sessions of lectures were conducted. These include techniques of teeth separation, band selection and placement, bracket position in ideal and special cases encountered in dental offices in routine like bonding on ceramic crowns.
Detailed lectures were followed by demonstration and hands on practice session of separation, banding and bonding on simulated dental models and live patients. All the participants were made to perform banding and bonding procedure on live patients in consultant clinics under direct supervision.
The second day of the couse commenced with lecture by Professor Dr Ashfaq Ur Rahim, Head of oral and maxillofacial surgery department. He introduced all the participants to the multidisciplinary aspect of orthodontics related to the impacted maxillary canine. Starting with basic etiology, its classification, he explained all the surgical techniques for canine exposure and eruption. Further orthodontic aspect was explained by Professor Dr Farhat Amin. She explained the proper diagnosis, interception at late mixed dentition stage and concept of palatal expansion in orthodontics.
Participants were later introduced to different kinds of expanders used in orthodontics. Activation of expansion appliances were demonstrated. Participants were encourage to perform model analysis. This has been regarded as basic requirement for planning expansion and fabricated ballista spring for canine eruption.
The session ended with all participants fabricating closing loops used in retraction mechanics.
