KARACHI: The Baqai Dental College’s community dentistry department recently hosted a workshop for second-year BDS students, focusing on the effectiveness of fluoride gel application in preventing dental caries and managing incipient lesions.
The workshop covered professional dental procedures involving concentrated fluoride gel solutions, which are applied using customised trays for each patient by dental professionals.
The session began with a lecture by Dr. Samreen Mazhar, supervised by Prof. Dr. Asghar Ali Shigri. Additional presentations by Dr. Raza Ali Abidi, Dr. Mahwish Bano, and Dr. Nauman Qamar explored topics such as the importance of fluoride in dental care, the different forms of professionally applied fluoride, and the correct techniques for using fluoride in conservative dental treatments.
Students then moved to the Phantom Head Lab for clinical demonstrations, where they applied fluoride gel using customised trays designed for the maxillary and mandibular arches. Each student placed one-third of the fluoride gel in the tray, which was positioned in the patient’s mouth for a four-minute duration to ensure proper adherence to the teeth.
This interactive workshop provided students with valuable hands-on experience, enhancing their understanding of the role of fluoride in preventive dentistry.
