GENEVA: Several healthcare facilities in Afghanistan have been deprived of finances because the western donors have frozen helping hands as they were prohibited from dealing with the new Taliban government. It has taken the medical facilities on the verge of immediate closure due to the lack of capital, said the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr Rick Brennan, Regional Emergency Director, WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, has said that up to ninety per cent of Afghanistan’s medical facilities would probably be cease functioning soon. That would be associated with increased illness and deaths, Brennan said.

He further said that his organization had been trying to compensate by providing medical supplies, equipment and financing to the five hundred of the medical centres. WHO has also been traversing overland options for medical supplies via trucks from Pakistan, he said.
