KARACHI: Department of Community Dentistry of Baqai Dental College, Baqai Medical University (BMU) recently arranged an educational field trip for second year BDS students to the Baqai Medical Complex, Khuda Ki Basti and Salimullah Fahmi Primary Memorial School Unit 1.

Prof. Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, Head of the Community Dentistry Department, BMU, Dr Raza Abbas Abidi, Dr Samreen Shafqat and Dr Mahwish Bano, supervised these educational visits.

The visit's main objective was to spread awareness among the community and students about maintaining oral hygiene and how such measures can help an individual stay healthy.

On arrival, Dr Raza Abidi briefed the dental students about the community-oriented vision of late Prof. Dr Fariduddin Baqai and Prof. Dr Zahida Baqai. Students and faculty visited the medical complex consisting of general, gynae and dental OPDs, laboratory, and Salimullah Fahmi Memorial Primary School (Unit 4). Patients have been treated free of cost at the centre, and students enjoy the great privileges and study free of cost.

After the tour, the students were divided into groups and were assigned different classrooms. Each group gave an informative lecture, guiding the school children on the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene and instructing them on the drawbacks of its negligence. The students made it interactive by engaging the children in activities and quizzes.

In the field visit to Unit 1, the BDS students conducted lectures on oral hygiene, dental fluorosis, periodontal diseases, and dental caries. They demonstrated the tooth brushing methods on the model. The lectures and demonstration were carried out in a simple enough language for the youngsters to comprehend effortlessly.

The trip was completed on a group photo of the faculty and 2nd-year dental students.
