LARKANA: Sindh's provincial health department recently directed the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Medical University Larkana to begin the admission process for the session 2021-2022 by admitting candidates who have secured more than 50 per cent marks in the MDCAT 2021.

Earlier, Sindh Cabinet decided to lower the pass percentage of the Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (MDCAT) 2021 from 65 to 50. Following this, Sindh's health department issued a notification directing the SMBB Medical University Larkana to initiate the process of giving admissions to students who had secured more than 50 per cent marks in the MDCAT. The officials said they didn't want to keep their medical and dental college seats vacant and fill them with students from other provinces.

Sindh Health Departments decision to begin admission at 50 per cent marks has been contrary to Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) ruling. PMC had earlier cleared that it would not register students who haven't passed the Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (MDCAT) 2021 as per the criteria set by the regulatory body.

According to President PMC, there were enough students in Sindh who had passed the MDCAT, secured 65 per cent and could be granted admissions to public and private medical and dental colleges in the Sindh province.
