KARACHI: An interactive lecture was organised by Professor Dr Shama Asghar, HOD Operative Dentistry for the students of final year and House Officers currently posted in the Department of Operative Dentistry. The theme of this lecture was novel approaches to detection of non cavitated occlusal caries and implementation of ICDAS coding for carious lesions.
For this purpose, an international guest speaker, Dr Erum Zain Senior Lecturer at SEGi University Malaysia was invited. She is a dynamic academician, clinician, and researcher, with a PhD. from the University of Malaysia and has extensively worked along with her research team on the development of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) as a tool for detection of early/incipient carious lesions. She is passionate about teaching her students the importance of detecting early, non cavitated carious lesions and the scope of preventive dentistry.
She began her presentation with a brief overview of clinical picture of occlusal caries and its ICDAS coding particularly the initial stages of CODE 0, 1 and 2. She then went on to elaborate upon the various methods that can be used to detect the incipient carious lesions with particular focus on her research teams’ development of OCT. She concluded her informative session with Q&A with the audience in which the final year students enthusiastically participated.
Dr Shama closed the session with a note of thanks. Director General Bahria University Health Sciences Vice Admiral ® Khalid Amin HI(M) then presented the honorable speaker with a shield to commemorate her visit to Bahria University Dental College and invited her to consider Bahria University for future research collaborations.
