LAHORE: Second-year BDS students of the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry at CMH Lahore Medical College & Institute of Dentistry recently conducted a comprehensive field trip to the Army Public School (APS) for Girls.
Following the success of the previous visit, 71 students, accompanied by five faculty members—Dr. Ali Anwaar, Dr. Javariya Ashraf, Dr. Ehtisham, Dr. Nimra—and ten house officers, gained practical experience under the supervision of Dr. Asma Shakoor, Head of the Department.
During the visit, the students conducted oral hygiene assessments using modified WHO forms to record Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT), alongside brushing habits and dental visit histories. This hands-on experience significantly enhanced their diagnostic and communication skills.
Besides interactive brushing technique demonstrations by HOs, an oral hygiene awareness session was also organised for APS students, emphasising the importance of dental care and prevention.
A key development was the introduction of a follow-up treatment plan, in collaboration with the Institute of Dentistry at CMH Lahore Medical College, alongside a commitment from APS for biannual dental check-ups.
To encourage good dental habits, free samples of toothpaste, toothbrushes, and puzzles were distributed among the APS students.
The field trip highlighted the students' growing confidence, supported by strong faculty mentorship, in promoting healthy dental practices across the community.
Dr. Asma Shakoor’s leadership was instrumental in organising this outreach programme.
