DN Report Karachi: A one-day symposium titled “Treating dento-facial deformity with orthognathic surgery” was held here under the aegis of Ziaudding University’s Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department at its Clifton campus. Held under the supervision of Prof. Noor-ul-Wahab, participants of the symposium discussed and strengthened the interaction between the two major specialties managing facial deformity - Orthodontics and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. It was supported and endorsed by Pakistan Dental Association (PDA), Pakistan Association of Orthodontists (PAO), and Pakistan Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (PAOMS). In all eight lectures were delivered by experts, while two interactive sessions on the treatment planning for a facial deformity patient were organized. As many as 240 participants, mostly orthodontics and oral & maxillofacial surgery trainees, belonging to Islamabad, Quetta, Hyderabad, Jamshoro and Karachi participated. General dental practitioners, including Dr. Najeeb Siddiqui, Prof. Junaid Lakhani, Dr. Kashif Naqvi, Dr. Humayun Siddiqui, Dr. Hussnain Sakrani, Dr. Wahab Kadri, Dr. Sufyan Ahmad, Dr. Jehan Alam, Dr. Ajit Kumar, Dr. Rafia Lahooti, Dr. Mudassar Saleem and Dr. Abdul Jabbar were among the participants. The symposium held between 9:00am and 5:00pm carried 6 CDE hours. The day began with recitation of Holy Quran by Dr. Saeedullah Shah while Prof. Noor-ul-Wahab presented the welcome address. The host of the event was Dr. Nigam Anwar. First session of the symposium was chaired and co-chaired by Dr. Jehanzeb Mughal and Dr. Afeef Umar Zia, respectively. Dr. Syed Shah Faisal spoke on the orthodontists’ expectations from the oral & maxillofacial surgeon, highlighting the importance of a close interaction between orthodontists and oral & maxillofacial surgeons in achieving an optimal outcome in correction of facial deformity. The topic of Dr. Adnan Aslam’s presentation was ‘What does an OMS want from an orthodontist? Dr. Babar Ashraf presented an easy-to-understand view of pre-surgical orthodontics. Prof. Noor-ul-Wahab spoke about mandibular osteotomies, and their different types and indications, and specifically detailed Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy, including its various modifications. Prof. Navid Qureshy followed with maxillary osteotomies, and in his usual pleasant manner, talked about its various types. The hallmark of the symposium was the two interactive treatment planning sessions. These included various cases of facial deformity, including Class 3 malocclusion, low and high angle Class 2 malocclusions, facial asymmetry, gross mandibular deformity and mild deformity correctable with orthodontic camouflage. These cases were presented by orthodontic residents from AIDM, KMDC and LUMHS. Dr. Syed Shah Faisal and Dr. Syed Sheeraz Hussain were the panel experts in the first interactive session while Dr. Afeef Umar Zia acted as moderator. Dr. Jehanzeb Mughal and Prof. Ambreen gave shields to the speakers, chair and co-chair of the first session. The second session began with Prof. Ambreen Afzal Ehsan in chair and Dr. Adnan Aslam as the co-chair. Prof. Ambreen during her presentation on the role of orthodontists in cleft care showcased an excellent case series of orthodontic management at various stages of cleft patient management. Dr. Afeef Umar Zia simplified the concept of orthodontic camouflage for facial deformity patients. He especially emphasized on correct patient selection for orthodontic camouflage patient. The last presentation of the day was from Dr. Adnan Aslam, who spoke about various forms of facial asymmetry, and various surgical means of correcting it. Prof. Ambreen awarded shields to the speakers. Dr. Afeef and Dr. Abdul Jabbar were the panel experts in the second interactive planning session. The day ended with a closing speech by Prof. Noor-ul-Wahab.
