The Department of Community Dentistry, Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, recently organized an oral health awareness program. The program was conducted for the workers of Amreli Steel Mill-who were invited to AIDM- under the supervision of Dr Naseer Ahmed (HOD Community Dentistry) and lecturers Dr Shazel William and Dr Thelma Farasat.
A group of students of 2nd Year BDS gave a presentation to promote oral health and spread awareness regarding relevant occupational hazards and its significance among school teachers and steel mill workers. The moto of the program was “Oral health is overall health”. The dental students demonstrated correct brushing techniques and briefed the audience about the systemic effect of oral bacteria. There was also a discussion of the connection between dental health and eating pattern. Medical Director Altamash Hospital, Dr Munir also graced the occasion.
As a part of the same campaign another group of 2nd year BDS students visited the Amreli Steel Mills, S.I.T.E head office, under the supervision of Dr. Naseer Ahmed , Assistant Professor / Head of Department along with Dr. Thelma Farasat and Dr. Shazel William .The purpose of this visit was to spread awareness regarding oral hygiene among Steel Mill employees. A counselling session was held in which the positive and negative perceptions were discussed regarding oral hygiene. After the discussion a brief oral examination of the employees was conducted by students under the supervision of faculty. The motivation behind the visit was to acclimate the students with clinical protocols, including diagnosing patients and rehearsing correspondence skills. The workforce informed the students in regards to history taking and oral examination.
