KARACHI: The Department of Community Dentistry, Baqai Dental College, Baqai Medical University (BMU) recently conducted a hands-on workshop titled 'Professionally Applied Topical Fluorides Gel and Fluoride Varnish Application' for second year BDS students.
Prof. Dr Asghar Ali Shigri, Head of Community Dentistry Department, BMU and his faculty members, Dr Raza Abbas Abidi, Dr Samreen Shafqat and Dr Mahwish Bano, supervised the workshop.
Professionally applied topical fluorides have been indicated for children and adults with one or more decayed smooth surfaces and those at high risk for caries. The effectiveness of fluoride varnish and gel applications has been well established in caries prevention. These methods were practically performed on phantom heads for a more visual and descriptive demonstration.
On this occasion, Prof. Dr Asghar Ali Shigri explained the importance and significance of applying topical fluoride professionally. He further explained its indications, contraindications and step by step procedure of performing professionally applied topical fluorides gel and fluoride varnish application.
The department had arranged all the necessary equipment that was state-of-the-art for the students to understand the procedure competently. The students performed professionally applied topical fluorides gel and fluoride varnish application procedures on phantom heads.
The students later expressed their gratitude to the department for arranging and organizing such an event.
