ISLAMABAD: Dr. Qurat-Ul-Ain, Head of Community Dentistry at Abbottabad International Dental College, spearheaded an impactful awareness campaign on oral health for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). The initiative, held at the Family Protection and Rehabilitation Centre (FPRC) in Islamabad, was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights and local dental professionals.
This campaign was part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, aimed at addressing health inequalities faced by GBV survivors. The Ministry of Human Rights, known for championing the social, economic, and legal rights of vulnerable groups, actively supported this initiative as a step toward holistic empowerment and human dignity.
As a key panelist, Dr. Qurat-Ul-Ain shed light on the overlooked oral health challenges faced by GBV survivors. She highlighted how trauma can severely impact oral health, stressing the urgent need for early intervention and accessible dental care as part of survivors’ overall recovery plans.
Dr. Qurat-Ul-Ain emphasized, “Survivors of gender-based violence often face compounded health challenges. Addressing oral health not only improves physical well-being but also restores confidence and dignity.”
The campaign included a dynamic oral health screening and awareness session tailored to the needs of GBV survivors. Participants learned practical self-care tips and were trained in proper brushing and flossing techniques during interactive demonstrations. Oral hygiene kits containing essential dental supplies were distributed to attendees, ensuring they had the tools needed for ongoing care.
The event also connected survivors with local dental care resources, ensuring long-term support beyond the campaign.
