Community Oral Health Education Contest at BUMDC

Karachi: Department of Community Dentistry, Bahria University Medical & Dental College (BUMDC) Karachi recently organized a dental health education contest, under the supervision of Dr Kulsoom Rizvi.

Dr. Asher Afaq, Principal Dow International dental college OHJA Campus, DUHS and Head of the Department of Community Dentistry was the Guest Speaker as well as the member of judges’ panel that included Madam Nighat Huda, Head of the Department of Medical Education and Examination and Dr Daud Mirza, Head of the Department of Oral Pathology.

The event was also graced by Mr. Khalid Amin , Director General BUMDC and Dr. Shaheen Moin, Principal Medical Section.

Dr. Asher Afaq, spoke of the efforts made by the students appreciate that their effort’s and go a long way in uplifting the profession and the oral health policies of the country, thereby benefitting both the patients and the dentists. He also emphasized the voluntary services which should be offered by the young dentists after they have graduate.

As part of the contest, 30 students of the 2nd year BDS participated, with each one of them exhibiting different health education material in the form of posters, leaflets, calendars, charts and booklets. The topics entailed the preventive and epidemiological aspects of community dentistry such as dental fluorosis, baby bottle tooth decay, oral health care during pregnancy and teen years, smoking cessation protocol and oral cancer.

The contest concluded on a prize distribution ceremony in which the hard work of the organizers and of the meritorious students were acknowledged through honorary shields and certificates of appreciation.

Such educational programs help in imparting diagnostic knowledge to dental students early on in their professional years, enabling them to serve community with profound skills.
