KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) recently celebrated PINKTOBER to enlighten the community about breast cancer.
Each year in Pakistan, 90,000 females get diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,000 women die due to a lack of awareness and early detection.
Prof. Dr Shaista Effendi, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Ziauddin Hospital, conducted an awareness session on Breast Cancer for FJDC’s faculty and students. She spoke about head and neck cancer and enlightened the audience about the risk factors of breast cancer prevalent in society. She also talked about prevention, treatment frequency and what early treatment can do to a patient.
FJDC also set up a free breast cancer screening camp. Dr Zeba Batool Attar, Assistant Professor, General Surgery, FJDC, carried out this camp in the Azam Town General Hospital affiliated with the college.
It was an opportunity to increase attention to the early detection of Breast Cancer, a treatable disease. All the walk-in patients had either felt a lump in their breast or wanted a routine examination. Some of them wanted to know whether their lump was cancerous or not.
Clinical dental students, staff nurses and other female doctors of the college and hospital were also given a brief lecture on self-examination and steps of a screening procedure.
Moreover, FJDC’s students also organized a bake sale and festival for breast cancer awareness. Everyone enjoyed the food and raised significant funds for this vital cause. All proceeds went to Pink Ribbon Pakistan, an organisation constructing a hospital for breast cancer treatment and diagnosis.
Dr Hussain Askary, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), FJDC, personally thanked all the volunteers, donors, and organisers.
