Things You Should Know Before Starting Dental School

A good dentist should know every fine detail of a tooth and its surrounding structures. So, a dental student has to read every fine detail of the head, neck and oral cavity.

Who should choose BDS?

BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery. It is an undergraduate degree to become a dental surgeon. It's a four-year programme then one year of house job is necessary to get registered in Pakistan.

Students should choose BDS over MBBS only if it's their passion. Secondly, your parents are dentists and have their running dental clinic. Thirdly, no doubt it has fewer working hours and no emergencies unless you will choose OMFS in future.

BDS is not an easy task

A first-year student should know that dentistry is not an easy job. Although medical students have to read all, the dental ones have to read every fine detail of the head, neck and oral cavity. A good dentist should know every fine detail of a tooth and its surrounding structures.

What to do in dental school

Every dental school has some flaws. Always remember one thing that high grades are not a guarantee that you will be a good dentist. A dental student should be good theoretically as well as practically. So you should polish your skills as much as possible. Be open-minded and adaptable during group discussions and lectures. In this way, you will ask queries from your teachers and seniors easily.

Search for good friends as it will be very tough to spend this long duration without any good friends. As you all know: "A friend in need is a friend indeed".

Study smartly!

Every dental student is nervous about studies as nobody knows how to study in the first year. But always remember you have to do the study daily and smartly. In this way, you will not overburden yourself the night before an exam. And the most important thing is that you should have fun and sleep properly otherwise you can't study efficiently.

Your basics should be strong theoretically as well as practically. You can take help from your seniors as well as your teachers. Your posture and seat positioning are significant. Once you are used to improper posture, you will soon get a gift of backache. So never be shy to improve yourself.

Dentistry is all about giving and take!

Always keep one thing in your mind that this field is expensive. You will never become a billionaire on the first day after your graduation. First of all, you have to pay for this. Secondly, you should have a platform to implement your skills. Thirdly there is a specialisation study for BDS graduates similar to the MBBS one, that you have to do, to be a good specialised dental surgeon in future.
