KARACHI: Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC) organised a panel discussion and lectures by two experts in connection with World No Tobacco Day at the DHA Suffa University.

Since 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) member states have been marking World No Tobacco Day to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects, causing more than 8 million deaths annually worldwide.

Speakers from FJDC included Dr Hussain Askary, CEO and Head of Community Dentistry, Dr Sana Mateen, In charge and Consultant Dental Surgeon at Fast Track Dental Clinics and Dr Madiha Sultan, Periodontist at Sindh Government Hospital. Both Dr Sana and Dr Madiha are FJDC alumni.

Dr Hussain talked about the impacts of tobacco use and discussed in detail the tobacco industry, its marketing techniques, and how tobacco and nicotine products are being promoted through multimedia platforms in a subtle way.

Dr Sana talked about advancements in dental treatments and how fast-track dental clinics are equipped with all the efficient diagnostic and treatment tools.

This was followed by a panel discussion, in which Dr Madiha spoke about health risks of smoking.

Being a periodontist, she emphasised the effects of tobacco on our gums and bone health.

Later, the students enthusiastically participated in a question and answer session.

The FJDC efforts for creating awareness on the issue were appreciated by the management of DHA Suffa University, including Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmed Saeed Minhas, Chairperson CSR Department Mr Saqib Ghias and Director Alumni Department Ms Tehseen Azhar.

Dr Hussain Askary was awarded a memento by Prof Dr Minhas.

At the end, five lucky draws were held, distributing gift hampers among the winners.
