KARACHI: The Department of Community & Preventive Dentistry, Bahria University Medical & Dental College (BUMDC), arranged oral health education and a free dental checkup visit to the Special Children School PNAD Mauripur to mark World Oral Health Day 2022.
The dental team comprised Prof Dr Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi, Vice-Principal & Head of Community Dentistry Department, BUMDC, Dr Maria Moin (Assistant Professor), Dr Mohsin Haider and Dr Mansoor Dar (Senior Lecturers) and house officers, which include Dr Anmol, Dr Iqra, Dr Maryam, Dr Rubab, Ammara, Dr Bakhtawar and Dr Warisha.
The team conducted interactive sessions in every class. There are 66 special children in the target audience, including 28 hearing impaired, 20 intellectually disabled, 02 visually impaired, and 16 multiple handicapped.
The dental team provided the dental checkups and gave oral health education individually to the cooperative special students and their caregivers concerning their disability. The oral health condition was recorded on validated WHO forms. Later it was followed by general oral health promotion activities.
The session comprised of oral presentation of common oral diseases, highlighting their etiological and risk factors with particular emphasis on preventive measures. The information was conveyed through artificial teeth models, charts and lively interaction.
Oral hygiene practices such as meticulous tooth brushing techniques were also demonstrated on models. Students were given colouring exercises for reinforcement of their brushing habits.
The school principal, administrator and staff members were pleased with the oral health activity and had their queries and problems addressed. The BUMDC team looks forward to conducting more oral health awareness sessions in the future.
