LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) recently launched its 9th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) with zeal and zest.
The introduction of the diploma was given by Prof Ayaz Ali Khan — National Coordinator, IADSR, and explained that this diploma would provide knowledge and skills beyond the highest standards. He further elaborated the aim of the qualification that is to transform the oral health landscape of the country through empowering health care professionals and the public. He assured that upon the completion of training, every participant should be able to treat patients with a practical and upgraded technique.
The first day was dedicated to pain management and medical emergencies in dental practice with two sessions held in that regard. The first session was conducted on pain management for general dental practitioners by Dr Khawaja Shehryar Nasir BDS, Diplomate — American Board of Orofacial Pain and Consultant Orofacial Pain Medicine. He explained that the management of pain in dentistry encompasses several procedural issues which include the delivery of anesthetic, and the management of post-procedural pain along with that, pain diagnosis and management strategies for orofacial conditions that cause pain in the face and head.
He thoroughly elaborated on the common pains encountered in the dental practice during odontogenic treatment. Dr Shehryar taught the pharmacology of odontogenic pain with their management. He further discussed non-odontogenic pain as well as its management. Participants were allowed to interact and clear their concerns regarding the topic.
The second session addressed medical emergencies along with CPR and was facilitated by Dr Arshad Taqi MBBS, FCPS, MCPS (Anesthesiology) and Consultant Anesthetist at Kaul Associated. He elaborated on the anaphylactic reaction that may obstruct airways, asthma or myocardial infarction and its management. He discussed the doses of local anesthetics that are to be given and toxicity that results due to inappropriate dosages.
The facilitator explained basic support life with its importance and components. Dr Arshad further taught CPR, components of CPR, and the sequence of CPR. He answered all the queries raised by the participants and made the session interactive. At the end of the session, participants shared their feedback and suggestions that are highly valuable to the IADSR.
