KARACHI: The Continuing Dental Education (CDE) committee of Sir Syed College of Medical Sciences (SSCMS) recently organised a session to highlight the debilitating effects of chalia or betel nut chewing.
The department invited Dr Bushra Anne Syed as a guest speaker. Dr Ajeet Rathi and Dr Junaid Shakeel also spoke on occasion and clinically presented the disastrous oral effects of chalia or betel nut chewing to the audience. The event was well attended by students and medical and dental faculty.
Prof HR Sukhia, Principal Dental College, SSCMS, stressed the importance of community dental visits and told the audience that it is the responsibility of all dental professionals to educate the masses about this menace. He further stressed that oral cancer has destroyed lives at an early age and is preventable by simply stopping the sale of chalia, tobacco and naswar (powdered tobacco) in the general population.
The session was followed by a debate on the topic amongst the oral surgery specialists. The event was praised by Sir Syed Admin, who praised the CDE committee for promoting dental education.
