KARACHI: Bahria University Medical & Dental College recently conducted an oral health awareness program and arranged free dental checkups in Al-Noor Public School.

The Health Care Professional (HCP) team of BUMDC's dental college participated in this activity at a charity-based school in Hijrat Colony, Karachi. The team comprised of Dr Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi, Vice-Principal and Head of Community Dentistry Department, Dr Maria Moin, Dr Mohsin Haider, Dr Hajra Asghar, Dr Ramsha, Dr Wajiha, Dr Warda, Dr Ammar, Dr Arsalan, Dr Mahnoor, Dr Mahwish, Dr Anfaal, Dr Bisma and Dr A. Rehman.

The session comprised of oral presentation of common oral diseases, highlighting their etiological & risk factors with particular emphasis on preventive measures. The team conveyed the information and tooth brushing techniques through artificial teeth models and charts.

A dental checkup was provided to all students, and the oral health condition was recorded on validated WHO forms. Children's knowledge and attitude about oral health, related oral hygiene practices, and lifestyle factors that influence their oral health were also assessed via a questionnaire. As assessed by the HCP team, oral health was considered good.

The activity aimed to enable individuals to take control of their oral hygiene maintenance by giving them a reliable set of information that prevents oral diseases before they occur. This approach seeks to identify underprivileged populations that lack adequate resources and access to care; hence are in more need of oral health awareness programs.

The school administrator and staff members addressed the queries and problems in the end.
