KARACHI: The Department of Prosthodontics of Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences, Jinnah Sindh Medical University Karachi completed its first facial prosthesis case for the patient, who is a resident of District Umar-Kot and was operated by an ENT Surgeon and referred to the Prosthodontics Department of SIOHS.
After evaluation, it was decided to fabricate an eye prosthesis and a maxillary Obturator simultaneously. The case was completed by Senior Registrar Dr Mehvish Khan and seven residents along with auxiliary staff. The whole team worked under the supervision of the Head of Prosthodontics Department, Prof Mehmood Hussain. The laboratory services were provided by Western Laboratory on a complementary basis.
Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University, congratulated the team of SIOHS and the department of Prosthodontics for achieving the milestone and said that people with facial disfigurement due to an accident start to feel alone in society. In such a case, the process of facial prosthesis in JSMU will play a significant role in connecting these people with society and the said people will be able to live a life confidently.
Professor Yawar Ali Abidi, Dean of SIOHS, and Zubair Abbasi, Principal Professor, appreciated the efforts of the team of the Prosthodontics Department and assured all possible support for the arrangement of prostheses equipment.
In this regard, Professor Mehmood Hussain, Head of the Prosthodontics Department, has said that our aim is to make our department a center of excellence in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics in Pakistan, as there are no such centers in Pakistan yet.
With the vision of honorable Vice Chancellor JSMU, SIOHS will be ready to provide such prosthesis at a very low cost to facilitate such patients in future as well, he added.
