MIRPURKHAS: Bhitai Dental and Medical College (BDMC) Mirpurkhas recently organised a one-day oral health awareness camp at the local DHQ hospital, in collaboration with the Sindh health department.
The event was held under the directives of the Director General of Health, led by Deputy Managing Director Dr Mushtaq Khan.
The camp, the first in a series of monthly camps planned for different DHQs and THQs, was orchestrated by civil surgeons, the assistant director of dentistry, and the focal person of the BDMC dental department.
BDMC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department spearheaded the programme in collaboration with the Community Dentistry Department of the college. The primary aim was to enlighten patients and general healthcare practitioners about premalignant lesions, ensuring early diagnosis and referral for oral cancer.
The session, led by consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr Aftab Ahmed, covered topics such as common orofacial swellings (cysts and tumors), maxillofacial trauma, and other orofacial and neck pathologies through clinical images.
This information was shared with general and special cadre physicians and surgeons, facilitating emergency maxillofacial management and prompt referrals.
Following the educational session, patients underwent examinations by the Maxillofacial Team, and WHO oral health assessment forms were completed. Those diagnosed with maxillofacial conditions were managed on-site, while some were referred to BDMC for definitive treatment. This initiative stands as a proactive step towards promoting oral health awareness and ensuring timely intervention for oral health issues in the region.
