Surgical skills for discharging ear taught at DUHS

10th Hands-on Temporal Bone Workshop & Ear Surgery Course




KARACHI - Renowned ENT Specialist & Surgeon Prof Dr Mohammad Umar Farooq said discharging ears is a common community problem in developing countries. The cases, which does not responds to medical treatment and particularly those having the substantial evidence of developing potential life threatening complications warrants surgical intervention.


“Unfortunately there is lack of surgical skill laboratories and training programs for graduates and postgraduates where they can be trained to enhance their surgical skill by performing cadaver dissection”. Considering the gravity of the situation, DUHS and ENT Department of Civil Hospital Karachi has organized hands on temporal bone workshop and ear surgery course, the first ever event of its kind in Pakistan.


He was speaking at Dow Medical College at the Anatomy Hall on 10th Hands-On Temporal Bone Workshop and Ear Surgery Course. He further said that along with the workshop a free mobile ear camp in remote areas of Pakistan will be arranged to provide facility of Ear Surgery at the door step of poor people of our country.


Chairperson of Department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery of Dow Medical College, Prof Iqbal Muhammad Khyani, said this training will go a long way in preventing the life threatening complications that can occur due to various ear diseases. The ear complication should not be ignored as ordinary and an ENT surgeon should be approached in such cases.


He mentioned that during this workshop the participants shall be trained to such cases. He mentioned that during this workshop surgical management of different ear diseases will be taught & practiced on cadaveric bone. The operation includes will be for the treatment of deafness, discharging ear, tympanic membrane reconstruction, fluid in middle ear, facial nerve decompression and many others.



He added that such workshops are very expensive abroad and our doctors remain deprived from this important part of their training but now these workshops have come within their range with international standard and expertise obtained by them from this training course.


Prof Muhammad Umar Farooq and Prof Iqbal A. Muhammad Khyani are the directors of this workshop. This time indigenous master trainers and the guest faculty from United Kingdom Prof Shakeel R Saeed, Prof of Otology / Neuro-otology University College London, Ear institute.


He is the Consultant ENT and Skull base surgeon, Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital and National Hospital for Neurology and Neuro-surgery London. He will be training the participants of this workshop who will benefit from his experience and expertise in temporal bone dissection.


The participants of this workshop belong from all over the Pakistan. First time it was held in 2005 & since then, it has been organized regularly every year.
