KARACHI:  The Sindh Assembly has recently passed the Sindh Student Union Bill to revive student unions.

Sindh became the first province to overturn the ban on student unions after 38 years. The Sindh Assembly unanimously enacted the Sindh Student Union Bill to restore student organisations and encourage a climate of social contact and exchange of ideas in educational institutions and limitations on violence and gun culture.

The military dictator General Ziaul Haq's regime imposed the ban across the country in 1984.

The importance of the student union can be reckoned by a clause in the bill that specifies that the educational institution must have at least one nominee of the elected union in its syndicate and senate board and a harassment committee.

The Sindh Student Union Bill was prepared in 2019 and referred to the law and legislative affairs standing committee for consideration. The bill was passed unanimously after two years of consultation with numerous stakeholders, with support from the Treasury and the opposition.
