KARACHI: The Department of Community Dentistry at Hamdard University and Dental Hospital (HUDH) recently orchestrated a hands-on activity for second-year BDS students of its Department of Oral Diagnosis to offer them their inaugural opportunity to conduct patient examinations under the supervision of experienced house officers and faculty members.
This event proved to be a learning experience for the students in terms of their initial interaction with real patients. Through this hands-on exercise, each student participated in comprehensive patient examinations while receiving guidance from house officers.
The focus of the activity was to equip the students with vital skills such as obtaining consent, taking patient histories, and conducting intraoral examinations. By placing emphasis on these fundamental aspects of patient care, the Department of Community Dentistry aimed to enhance the students' proficiency in delivering thorough and compassionate dental treatment.
The practical nature of this activity allowed the students to gain hands-on exposure and develop a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in patient examination.
Through close interaction with both the patients and the supervising faculty, the students acquired crucial communication and interpersonal skills, which play a vital role in establishing effective relationships with patients.
Dr Syed Muzamil Ali Shah, Head of the Department of Community Dentistry, expressed his enthusiasm for the activity's success and commended the efforts of faculty members Dr Shikoh Naz, Dr Saima Asim, and Dr Mudasir, for making it possible.
"This initiative was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and its practical application. We firmly believe that early exposure to patient examinations will greatly benefit our students, nurturing their growth as competent and compassionate dental professionals," he said.
HUDH remains steadfast in its commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities that empower its students to excel in the field of dentistry. By organising such practical activities, the institution continues to uphold its mission of producing well-rounded dental practitioners who are equipped to address the oral health needs of the community.
