Karachi: The Fatima Jinnah Dental College (FJDC), on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, marked annually on Feb 11th, reiterates its commitment to motivate women and girls and to acknowledge their efforts and achievements in the field.
FJDC has always been proud of its female faculty members, staff members and students and recognises their daily struggles in face of multiple social problems and challenges.
The institute ensures to be a safe, progressive and supportive space for all our women and girls.
This year, FJDC dedicates this day to its strong and talented female faculty, staff and the students, and pledges to provide them the support and opportunities they need to excel in the field of science.
FJDC’s CEO and Head of Community Dentistry Dr Hussain Askary in a a message on the day said: “Today, we recognise the contributions and achievements that women like you have made in the field of science and acknowledge; the countless obstacles that you have overcome to get where you are today.”
He said at the college named after the first female dentist of Pakistan, “we are inspired by the resilience, determination, and passion of women like you who are changing the world.”
“But we also know that there is still much work to be done. Despite the progress that has been made, women in science still face significant challenges, and it is our responsibility to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.”
“Let us embrace our power, our brilliance, and our potential, and let us work together to shatter the glass ceiling once and for all.” Dr Askary said.
CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
The FJDC has dedicated an entire month to create awareness about cancer and to educate the masses on how it can be prevented.
Cancer is a complex and diverse group of diseases characterised by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. It can occur in any part of the body and can affect people of all ages, genders, and races. It is a major public health issue worldwide, and its prevalence is on the rise. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death
globally, responsible for an estimated 10 million deaths in 2020. The International
Agency for Research on Cancer estimates that more than 178,000 new cancer cases
are diagnosed every year in Pakistan, and there are more than 117,000 cancer deaths annually.
The FJDC believes that early detection and treatment can significantly improve the chances of survival and quality of life. In addition, public education and awareness campaigns can also help in raising awareness about the importance of cancer screening and early detection, and reducing exposure to carcinogens in the environment.
In a message in this connection, the FJDC CEO says: “I am a firm believer that prevention is better than cure, and that by promoting healthy lifestyle habits and raising awareness about the dangers of cancer-causing factors, such as smoking and tobacco use, we can make a real difference in the lives of people.”
He stressed the importance of regular check-ups and screenings in detecting cancer early.
