MIRPUR KHAS: The Department of Health Professional Education and Department of Research and Development, Bhitai Dental and Medical College (BDMCH), Mirpurkhas, organized a one-day workshop on Problem Based Learning (PBL) which has been a pedagogical practice.
This workshop's leading facilitators were Dr Ali Maqbool, Director of Health Professionals Education and Head of Oral Biology Department; Dr Atif Mahmood, Director Research & Development and Department of Quality Enhancement Cells and Head of Physiology Department; and Dr Muhammad Anique, Lecturer and Basic Science Coordinator, Department of Health Professionals Education, BDMCH. Moreover, the presence of Dr Ghulam Mustafa, Honorable Chairman and Managing Director, BDMCH, graced the session.
The facilitators elaborated on the numerous techniques and approaches of PBL. The multiple variants of techniques and approaches include presenting an applied problem to a group of participants, letting them engage in discussions over several sessions.
PBL has been a student-centred approach, involves groups of students working to solve a real-world problem, quite different from the direct teaching method presenting facts and concepts about a specific subject to a class of students. PBL not only strengthens teamwork, research skills, and communication but sharpens critical thinking and problem-solving abilities essential for life-long learning.
Dr Ghulam Mustafa emphasized the need for more such sessions and said that BDMCH has a viable counselling program that keeps students and faculty motivated and positive.
Dr Permanand, Principal, BDMCH, appreciated the efforts of the facilitators of Bhitai Dental and Medical College.
