Senior Dental Surgeons Oppose PDA Elections Under 2024 Constitution

KARACHI: Senior dental surgeons across Pakistan have raised strong objections to the Pakistan Dental Association's (PDA) decision to conduct upcoming elections under the newly amended 2024 constitution. The PDA executive body recently announced that the elections would follow the revised constitutional framework, sparking concerns among the dental community.

In a letter addressed to the PDA Central Council President on August 12, 2024, dental professionals nationwide called for the elections to be held under the 2015 constitution, which they argue has proven effective and fair. The signatories fear that the 2024 amendments could compromise the integrity and transparency of the election process.

The decision to implement the 2024 constitution has been labeled "highly controversial," with critics arguing that proper procedures were not followed in its adoption. Many senior dental surgeons emphasize that using the 2015 constitution will ensure a fairer election and maintain continuity in PDA governance.

"We believe that the 2015 constitution has served us well, and any changes should be thoroughly reviewed before implementation," a spokesperson for the concerned group stated.

The letter demands an urgent review of the decision and a return to the 2015 framework for the elections. The PDA Central Council has yet to respond to these concerns or officially communicate with the nominated Chief Election Commissioner, Dr. Nabeel, who is still awaiting his appointment letter.
