KARACHI: Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD) is known for conducting various workshops and seminars so as to keep the dental fraternity updated with the current trends in dentistry.
Keeping the tradition, this time the Department of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics was the torch bearer, whereby conducting its first workshop of the series to follow. Recently, the workshop ‘Demystifying Rotary Endodontics’ was conducted in collaboration with Continuing Dental Education Committee (CDEC) of LCMD. An attractive feature of the workshop was its accrediting 3 credit hours with Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU).
Keynote facilitators of the event were Prof Dr Naheed Najmi, HOD of Department of Operative Dentistry and Vice Principal of College of Dentistry, LCMD and Dr Tazeen Zehra, Assistant Professor in the department of Operative Dentistry.
In addition the facilitators of this workshop were Dr Shafaq Sarim, Senior Registrar in Operative Dentistry, and Dr Uzair Aftab, Assistant Professor in Operative dentistry. The entire educational activity was organized by members of CDEC under the bird’s eye supervision of Prof Dr Uzma Zareef, Chairperson of the Committee.
The workshop aimed at honing the cognitive and technical skills of the young dental graduates with special attention to those who feel deprived of the opportunity to work on patients owing to the catastrophic years of COVID pandemic. Thus the event was attended mainly by the fresh graduates and house officers in addition to practicing dentists.
The workshop comprised of the lecture presentation followed by the Hands-on component. Host of the occasion; Dr Shafaq Sarim started the event early morning with brief overview and introduction to main speakers. Dr Tazeen Zehra gave a comprehensive presentation; ‘GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS IN CLEANING AND SHAPING’, giving an overview and principles to be followed while performing endodontic treatment also highlighting the procedural errors that one might come across if these principles are neglected. The following presentation ‘DECODING PROGRESSIVE TAPER’ by Prof Dr Naheed Najmi featured the evolution of root canal preparation instruments with special reference to advent of Progressive taper family of endodontic instruments. Entire session kept the audience gripped till the end where the speakers delivered exceptional lectures on their respective topics. Students participated enthusiastically and their queries were brilliantly answered by the speakers.
Next to follow was the hall mark of workshop that is Hands-on activity. Prof Dr Naheed Najmi gave live demo of root canal preparation using rotary nickel titanium protaper instruments on an endoblock , where she spilled the secret tips and techniques of root canal cleaning and shaping followed by obturation. The hands-on also included demonstration of ultrasonically assisted- irrigation and use of apex locator during endodontic procedure. The demo was followed by individual performance by each participant applying the knowledge gained into experiential learning which was thoroughly supervised by the facilitators.
In the end of the session participants, organizers, facilitators and main speakers were awarded with a certificate. Certificate was also awarded to the participant for the best performance in hands-on activity. The entire session was very well organized and well managed where the participants echoed a positive feedback which reflected that more of such educational workshops should be held for professional growth and inculcating life long learning.
