RAWALPINDI: Margalla College of Dentistry, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) recently organised an interactive session on 'Subfertility' for the well-being and awareness of its faculty.
Dr Samira Khan, a Consultant Gynaecologist and IVF specialist, who was invited as the guest speaker, explained the concept of subfertility.
Subfertility affects 1 in 5 couples in Pakistan. The incidence is 22 per cent. Out of them, male factor infertility is 25 – 30 per cent, and both male and female mixed is 40 per cent. Thirty per cent are unexplained cases, while 40 per cent is the female cause. There are multiple causes of infertility. Smoking, alcohol, obesity, caffeine and females aged above 36 put one at higher risk of infertility. Treatment options available for infertility are medical (ovulation induction), Surgical (laparoscopic) and ART techniques, including IUI, IVF and ICSI. The absolute risk of long term adverse outcomes of IVF is low, but there is a slight increase in the risk of borderline ovarian tumours.
The main aim of the session was to spread awareness regarding the disease, norms of the society, treatment and steps. The participants cleared their queries and myths regarding the treatments available and their outcomes.
In the end, Prof. Dr Amjad Mahmood, Principal & Dean, Margalla College of Dentistry, presented the shield to the guest speaker.
